How To Accessorise Your Modest Sequin Dress

How To Accessorise Your Modest Sequin Dress

Whatever the occasion, a glitzy sequin dress is never a bad idea! Finding a modest sequin dress can be challenging and can sometimes even cost an arm and leg. However, being in the formal wear industry for years has taught us one thing - sequin dresses never go out of style. So if you've found your dream gown, don't think of it as a big expense but rather a long-term investment (we're saving the planet - it's all good).

We all know the power the right statement dress holds - a bit of sparkle and all eyes are on you.

The challenge however, is accessorising it correctly without going overboard. Subtle, more simple dresses are always easier to accessorise and get creative with, and the temptation is sometimes there when accessorising a sequin evening dress with sleeves. However, you need to always remember that a modest sequin gown is an accessory itself!

As always there are no rigid rules and you should wear your dress however feels right but a little guidance never hurt no one! Here's our top tips on accessories when rocking your modest sequin gown

1. Keep footwear simple

Some feel brave and like to layer sequins and others like to stay safe and avoid too much 'sparkle'. Pairing a sequin evening dress with glittery metallic shoes could potentially make you look like a disco ball which could ruin the whole amazing look. Shimmi recommends neutral colour heels to pair with your sequin evening dress with sleeves, this means no sequins, beads or other embroideries on your shoes.. let's not overwhelm the look.

However, it doesn't always have to be colour neutral. The fashion police has relaxed certain rules over the years. Modest sequin gown could also be paired well with metallic shoes in gold, silver, bronze or copper heels. A metallic has also the benefit of looking extra dressy.

A sequin little black dress paired with red heels and clutch looks so good together, but we do believe this pairs better when it is a short dress.

2. Your jewellery choice really depends on your level of modesty and how glitz you want to go.

- Should I wear bracelets and bangles?

If you're wearing a fully long sleeve sequin party dress then it is best to skip the bracelets and bangles altogether because the wrist will already be covered.

- What about necklace and pendants?

The neckline of your modest sequin dress will determine whether to wear a neck piece. Your modest sequin gown will most likely have a high or covered neckline, and wearing a pendant or necklace may just look too much! We would advice to avoid necklaces and just pair it with a nice pair of black or pearl earrings.

Here's a modest look that Camila Cabello rocked to the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 10, 2019. From the front, this appears like a modest sequin dress featuring a high neckline and long sleeves. Cabella allowed the dress to keep the show, and only paired this long sleeve sequin gown with drop earrings.

Your sequin evening outfit doesn't have to be modest, for you to ditch the jewellery! We wanted to show you this look by Gigi Hadid. Gigi paired her Gold Sequin Sleeveless Jumpsuit with a statement sequin clutch and metallic heels, and ditched the jewellery altogether.

Modest sequin dress with a low/v neckline can be paired with simple, black accessories to keep the glam dress on the elegant side of sexy.

What if you're a hijabi?

As we have mentioned before, a modest sequin dress is an accessory itself. A modest sequin dress with a high/covered necklines is best paired with turban-styled hijabs. We would typically advice to wear your modest sequin party dress with a simple plain turban-styled hijab, however American supermodel Halima Aden shows us you can be bold with your choice of hijab too. The Somali model is consistently giving us looks, and we're here for it. She wore a modest sequin dress to the 2019 Lincoln Center Corporate Fashion Gala honoring Leonard A. Lauder. Halima Aden accessorised her modest sequin dress with a thin belt, diamond drop earring, and a patterned hijab.

3. Stay away from statement clutches!

Any clutch, tote or bag with blings, embroideries or patterns may potentially ruin your look. This means putting away your favourite LV bag away.. you can rock that another day. If you're wearing a bright coloured modest sequin dress then it is best to opt for a neutral clutch matching your heels. However, as you can see with Halima Aden's look, neutral modest sequin dresses could be potentially best paired with a statement clutch, if the jewellery is kept at minimum.

Shimmi Dresses has a range of modest sequin gowns you could choose from for any special event you have coming up after 12th of April. As we know it could be difficult to style modest sequin gowns, we have styled two of our dresses for you so that you don't have to stress about it!
